Created by Stan Lee with artwork by Jack Kirby, the team of mutants formed by Professor Charles Xavier was named the X-Men after the X Factor gene that gives each one unique special powers as a result of mutant evolution. The original superhero line-up consisted of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, The Beast, Ice Man and Angel, five teenage students of the Xavier Institute whose arch enemy was the mutant Magneto.
